Intense pulsed light therapy (IPL)
Intense pulsed phototherapy is a non-surgical procedure that uses intense pulses of light to treat clogged meibomian glands in the eyelids. These glands are responsible for secreting lipids into the tear film, which helps prevent their evaporation.
How IPL works
– Thermal stimulation: Light pulses produce heat that helps dissolve blockages in the meibomian glands.
– Improving the flow of the glands: After dissolving the blockages, the glands can secrete sebum better, which improves the quality of tears.
Treatment steps
1. Initial evaluation: The doctor evaluates the eye condition to ensure that the treatment is suitable for you.
2. Protection: Special protectors are placed on the eyes to protect them from light.
3. Pulse application: The IPL device is placed on the skin around the eyes and emits short pulses of light.
4. Duration of the session: The session usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
Number of sessions required
It usually takes several sessions to achieve the best results, often 3 to 5 sessions with an interval between each session.
Benefits
– Improving the secretion of fats: which reduces the evaporation of tears.
– Reduce inflammation: It may also help reduce inflammation in the eyelids.
– Long-lasting relief: It can provide long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.
Possible side effects
– Redness or slight swelling in the treatment area.
– Temporary sensitivity to light.
It is important to consult an ophthalmologist to determine if treatment is appropriate for your condition and to ensure that treatment is performed safely and effectively.
